Twitter Goes Supersize with 280 Character Tweets

Reading Time: < 1

Can’t get your message into 140 characters? Twitter is now testing a new 280 character limit.

Is this a good thing? Is more characters long overdue? Or, will this cause Twitter to lose the very thing that makes it special?

In a blog post, Twitter said: “We understand since many of you have been Tweeting for years, there may be an emotional attachment to 140 characters – we felt it, too. But we tried this, saw the power of what it will do, and fell in love with this new, still brief, constraint.”

I guess only time will tell, if double the character length will make any difference to Twitter usage.

The thing that made Twitter unique was the short 140 character limit, meaning that users had to edit their thoughts to the core message.

But let’s face it, Twitter already has a way to use more than 140 characters.

With photos and videos Twitter opened the door for rich media that can communicate so much more than could ever be done in 140 characters.

So, will 280 characters make any difference to Twitter usage?
